Nordic Women Mediators – Norway

NWM Norway is a national network of some 60 professional women with experience within conflict resolution and peacebuilding. The network members have expertise on a variety of issues relevant to all phases of peace processes, including mediation, ceasefire arrangements, constitutional reform, civil-military relations, international humanitarian law, human rights, communications and inclusion strategies. They range from mediators, diplomats, politicians, lawyers and military and police officers to thematic experts, civil society actors and communications and logistics specialists. The membership’s diversity is reflected in the members’ language competences, their career experiences, and which processes they have been involved in. Members have working experience from many countries including: Afghanistan, the Balkans, Colombia, Cyprus, Guatemala, Iraq, Israel-Palestine, Liberia, Mali, Myanmar, Nepal, the Philippines, South Sudan, Sri Lanka, Sudan, Syria, Yemen, along with others.

Objectives

The objectives of NWM Norway are to:

  1. Strengthen women's participation in peace processes at all levels, by
    • amplifying the voices of women mediators and peacemakers in conflict affected areas;
    • developing and fostering partnerships with other mediation and peacebuilding networks and organisations; and;
    • creating and supporting joint activities among members and with partners, as appropriate.
  2. Strengthen Nordic women actively involved in international peace-making efforts, by
    • enabling the sharing of experiences, knowledge and know-how among members, including through networking opportunities;
    • promoting and supporting members in their functions, as well as drawing on members' expertise across networks; and
    • facilitating access and providing networking opportunities with mediating and peacebuilding actors globally.
Norwegian Action Plan 2019-2022
A new National Action Plan on Women, Peace, and Security was launched in January 2019 by the Norwegian government. This is Norway’s fourth Women, Peace and Security Action Plan, and aims to include women from the earliest phases of peace talks, to ensure that their perspectives and women’s rights are a part of the negotiations. By doing this, the action plan works to achieve a more systematic focus on women, peace and security in efforts to support the implementation of peace agreements, strengthen the gender perspective in international operations and missions, and increase efforts to support women and girls in humanitarian work.
